David Bennet: "Urban Geographer Stephanie Wakefield on Climate Change: 'This Could Be Our Opportunity”
Within this reading Bennet summarizes Wakefield’s article, ‘Living in the Back Loop’. He makes it clear that Wakefield mentions both the negative and positive outcomes for the future. This idea of living in the Back Loop means that we are living in a phase of life where individuals and groups of organisms interact despite the previous unbridgeable divides. I see this as a positive phase, I’m a huge supporter of people from all different backgrounds coming together and working together as back loop creators. Together tech and design products can start to be made for a new civilization. This period of exploration can be beautiful. Bennet and Wakefield both reference this fitness trend. Many people are involved in a gym or commit time out of everyday to exercise. People are constantly being encouraged to push themselves physically and mentally so that humans can realize their potential thus redefining the limits of the human body and mind. This physical and mental push is a type of exploration for individuals and the more we become comfortable with experimenting the more exploratory we become as a species. Experimenting and exploring with one another is key to realizing the true potential of the world around us. For example, the realization that Oysters can help buffer the rising sea levels. That is a wild concept! As humans there are too many boundaries that hinder us from becoming back loop creators. Political, cultural, and religious boundaries are everywhere. Can you ever see the future of this world without them?
“Is our current political system capable of producing a desirable or livable outcome for humanity?”
